Child Care Tuition Scholarship Programs

Positive Bright Start supports high quality child care and recognizes that the cost makes it prohibitive for many families.  Families with low or moderate income have several options for childcare assistance.

First, call the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) at (785) 832-3700 to secure an application for Child Care Subsidy or access it online.

If you are approved, DCF will determine the amount of your subsidy based upon the number of hours care is needed.  The subsidy is paid directly to the child care facility. The balance is your family share.

The following scholarship programs are available to provide assistance for families:

  • Positive Bright Start Child Care Tuition Scholarship– funded by United Way of Douglas County, the City of Lawrence and private donations.
    • Sliding scale scholarships for families earning up to 300% Federal Poverty Level
    • Center based and home based child care — View a list of Scholarship Sites
    • Keep low-income parents in the work force or training for work
    • Provide quality early education opportunities for young children who otherwise would not be able to afford it
  • Strengthening Families Financial Aid Application– funded by Douglas County Early Childhood Block Grant
    • Sliding scale scholarships for families earning up to 300% Federal Poverty Level
    • Center based and home based child care
    • Family is working with a partner of the Douglas County Strengthening Families Network
    • Provides stability and social emotional support to children in families experiencing extreme hardship that may prevent them from working
  • Positive Bright Start Preschool Family Financial Aid Application – funded by private donations
    • Sliding scale scholarships for families earning up to 300% Federal Poverty Level
    • Awards to families with enrolled students at Positive Bright Start Preschool who are ineligible for other funding, not eligible for enough funding and/or funding from other resources have been depleted
    • Partial/supplemental, monthly scholarships or emergency/one time assistance
